Use the Dubai Metro vs Taxi Cost Calculator to compare an estimated metro journey with a Dubai taxi ride. Enter your fare zone, road distance, passengers and travel frequency to see which option may cost less for your trip or daily commute.
AED estimates · One-way and return trips · Editable fare assumptions
Compare the estimated price for the same journey. Select a metro fare category and enter the taxi road distance, starting fare, per-kilometre charge and any extra costs you expect. The result is a planning estimate, not a live quote or a route-specific fare guarantee.
Use the taxi road distance rather than straight-line distance. Extra fees are optional; enter only costs you expect to apply. The fare values can be edited to match current official information or a quoted journey.
Metro is the lower-cost option in this example.
Confirm the latest official nol fares and Dubai taxi fare schedule. Pickup time, booking method, waiting, tolls and special locations may change the final taxi fare.
The metro normally uses zone-based fares, while taxis combine a starting fare with distance and potentially other charges. The figures below provide a reference for comparison; check the RTA's current fare pages before making a travel decision.
| Transport / Fare Type | Within 1 Zone | 2 Adjacent Zones | More Than 2 Zones |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver nol Card | AED 3.00 | AED 5.00 | AED 7.50 |
| Regular Red Ticket | AED 4.00 | AED 6.00 | AED 8.50 |
| Gold Class with Silver fare basis | AED 6.00 | AED 10.00 | AED 15.00 |
| Dubai taxi | Starting fare + road distance + waiting and applicable extras | ||
The listed metro fares reflect the standard published zone fare structure shown by RTA at the time this content was prepared. Fare eligibility, card type, special concessions and later changes may affect the amount charged. The calculator models standard adult fares and a simplified Gold Class multiplier; it does not determine concession eligibility.
RTA publishes different starting fares for regular road pickups, electronic bookings and airport taxis. The calculator's starting fare and per-kilometre fields are editable because a real journey may use different values. It does not fetch a live meter rate, road route or Salik count.
For repeated journeys between stations, metro fares can keep daily transport spending predictable. Multiply the fare by your one-way journeys and travel days to estimate a monthly budget.
A taxi can be more convenient when the destination is far from a station, luggage is involved, or the journey starts or ends outside convenient metro operating hours.
Compare the total cost for every traveller. A taxi fare is generally charged for the vehicle journey, while metro fares are usually charged per passenger. Group size can therefore change the comparison.
A metro journey may be inexpensive but still require a feeder bus, walking, or a taxi at either end. Those connections add money and time. For a fair comparison, include the full trip from the actual starting point to the destination rather than comparing only the rail fare with the taxi meter.
Taxi costs depend on road distance rather than metro zones. A direct road route may be shorter or longer than expected because of traffic, one-way streets and road access. Use a realistic route distance and adjust the calculator's taxi assumptions when you have a current estimate.
The cheapest option is not automatically the best for every trip. Consider walking time, station access, transfers, weather, traffic, luggage and the time of day. A taxi may offer convenience and privacy, while the metro can avoid road congestion on routes it serves well.
Consider one adult taking two journeys per workday, travelling 22 days a month. Suppose the selected metro fare is AED 5 each way and a taxi trip covers 10 km with an assumed AED 5 starting fare and AED 2.23 per kilometre.
| Calculation | Metro | Taxi |
|---|---|---|
| One-way estimate | AED 5.00 | AED 27.30 |
| Two journeys per day | AED 10.00 | AED 54.60 |
| 22 travel days | AED 220.00 | AED 1,201.20 |
| Illustrative monthly difference | AED 981.20 lower for metro, before any additional connections or changed fare assumptions | |
This example is arithmetic using the stated inputs, not a guaranteed fare for a specific route. It excludes additional metro connections, taxi tolls, waiting time and any fare adjustments. If more than one person shares the taxi, compare the total vehicle cost with the combined metro fares for the group.
For a useful comparison, both options should cover the same trip and the same travel frequency. The monthly result is a simple projection based on the travel days you enter, not an official pass quote.

For many individual journeys, a metro fare can be lower than a taxi fare. The result depends on the fare zones, road distance, taxi pickup type, number of passengers and any additional transport needed to reach stations.
Standard fares are based on the fare tier or zones travelled and the ticket or nol card type. Check RTA's current fare table for exact prices and eligibility before travelling.
No. It uses the values you enter. Starting fares, kilometre rates, waiting costs and extra fees are editable assumptions, so the calculator cannot replace the taxi meter or an official live quote.
Yes. Choose two journeys per day for a typical out-and-back commute. For a different travel pattern, select the number of one-way journeys you expect to make each day.
The calculator compares the total cost for the selected number of travellers. Metro costs are multiplied by passengers, while the taxi estimate represents one vehicle journey. This is a simplified comparison and assumes one taxi can carry the group.
They are not detected automatically. Enter expected waiting costs in the waiting fields and any applicable extra fees in the extra-fees field. Confirm current charges and your route before relying on the estimate.
No. It compares journey fares and does not add the initial purchase price or top-up costs of a card. If you are buying a new card, check the official RTA information and consider any applicable card or pass costs separately.
The final meter amount can vary with pickup method, time of day, route distance, traffic, waiting, tolls and special locations. Always treat the calculated amount as an estimate.
Yes. Enter your typical journeys per day and travel days per month. The monthly projection multiplies the estimated journey costs by those inputs and does not automatically apply a travel pass or daily fare cap.
