UAE Annual Leave Calculator – Vacation Days & Leave Encashment: Legal Rules
Annual leave entitlements for standard full-time private-sector workers are governed principally by Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. Article 29 establishes the principal rules for paid annual leave, including the periods of service required and compensation for unused leave.
| Employment Period | Statutory Annual Leave | Calculation Guidance | Important Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to Six Months | No statutory annual leave entitlement under the standard threshold | Zero under this calculator model | An employer may offer more generous terms. |
| More Than Six Months, Less Than One Year | Two days per month of service | Illustrative two-day monthly accrual | Employer treatment of partial months must be checked. |
| One Completed Year | Thirty days per year | Thirty days for the first completed service year | The minimum entitlement may be improved by contract. |
| More Than One Year | Thirty days per year, including proportional subsequent service | Thirty days per completed year and prorated final part-year | The estimate assumes continuous eligible service. |
| Employment Termination | Unused entitled leave must be considered for payment | Unused days multiplied by basic daily wage | Verified balances and applicable statutory rules control the settlement. |
When Does Annual Leave Become Available?
Under the standard federal private-sector rules, an employee with more than six months but less than one year of service qualifies for annual leave calculated at two days per month. After a completed year, the normal entitlement is thirty days annually. Employers can provide more generous benefits.
The calculator distinguishes the initial qualifying period from the annual rate after the first year. The practical handling of fractional service months, employer-specific leave years and payroll rounding may differ from the example model. Those differences should be reconciled with company HR records.
Does Annual Leave Include Weekends?
UAE statutory annual leave is expressed in days, commonly treated as calendar days under the standard system. Public holidays or agreed days off falling within annual leave may count as part of the leave period unless the employment contract or company rules offer a more favourable arrangement.
An employer may maintain its records using working days if the arrangement preserves the worker's legal entitlement. Employees should avoid entering a working-day leave balance into a calendar-day calculation without confirming that both methods are comparable.
What Does the UAE Annual Leave Calculator Measure?
The UAE Annual Leave Calculator – Vacation Days & Leave Encashment estimates the amount of statutory leave accumulated through a selected calculation date. It then subtracts annual leave already taken and incorporates any separately documented leave-balance adjustment.
A leave balance is not necessarily the same thing as the total number of vacation days earned during employment. Someone who earned ninety days but already used seventy-five has an illustrative unused balance of fifteen days, before other valid adjustments.
The tool also converts the unused balance into an estimated AED value. For termination settlements, this is calculated using basic salary rather than automatically applying the employee's entire compensation package.
Because payroll systems may apply different leave-year conventions, the estimator is most useful when compared with an employer's official leave ledger. It cannot independently verify whether historical days were carried forward, paid out or otherwise adjusted.
Information to Prepare
Joining Date: Your actual employment commencement date.
Calculation Date: The date through which entitlement should be estimated.
Basic Salary: The monthly basic wage specified in your employment documentation.
Full Salary: Your regular monthly wage, including applicable fixed allowances, for illustrative leave-pay comparison.
Leave Taken: Total annual leave recorded for the selected service period.
Adjustments: Confirmed previous payouts, carried-forward amounts or HR ledger corrections.
UAE Annual Leave Calculation Formulas
The calculator applies a continuous-service estimation method. It counts actual dates, models the statutory first-year threshold and uses a pro-rata yearly rate after one completed year.
Earned Vacation Days
Once the first year is complete, annual entitlement is modelled at thirty days for each full service year, plus a proportional amount for an incomplete subsequent year.
Remaining Leave Balance
Remaining leave is earned leave minus recorded leave taken, plus valid leave-ledger adjustments. An excess taken balance is displayed as a negative amount, not automatically a debt.
Unused Leave Compensation
The estimated payout is the positive unused leave balance multiplied by the monthly basic salary divided by thirty. Cash value is displayed separately from ordinary paid leave.
Earned Leave Days − Annual Leave Taken + Net Ledger Adjustment
(Monthly Basic Salary ÷ 30) × Eligible Unused Leave Days
Why Is Monthly Basic Salary Divided by Thirty?
For the standard monthly-wage estimation convention, dividing the basic salary by thirty produces an indicative daily basic rate. A monthly basic salary of AED 7,500 therefore gives a daily rate of AED 250. Multiplying this amount by twelve eligible unused days produces an estimated payout of AED 3,000.
The calculation is intended for unpaid unused leave at the end of employment. It should not be confused with the salary an employee continues to receive while actually taking approved paid annual leave during an ongoing employment relationship.
How Partial Years Are Estimated
For service after the first completed year, the calculator uses the actual length of each service anniversary year as the denominator. This means that a leap year may have a different denominator from an ordinary year, while the annual entitlement remains thirty days.
For periods between six months and one year, the estimator uses an illustrative monthly accrual based on completed months and a proportional unfinished month. Since employment law does not prescribe every payroll rounding detail, the calculation may not exactly match an employer's accounting policy.
How to Use the UAE Annual Leave Calculator – Vacation Days & Leave Encashment
Complete the following three stages to obtain an estimated vacation balance and unused leave payment. Use figures from your contract, payslip and employer leave records whenever available.
Enter Employment Dates
Add your joining date and the date up to which you need the balance. For a resignation calculation, use the appropriate last date of employment rather than the resignation submission date.
Add Salary and Leave Records
Enter your current basic wage, optional full wage, annual leave already taken and documented balance adjustments. Make sure all used days cover the same employment period.
Review the Result
Calculate your accrued days, remaining vacation balance, daily basic wage and estimated unused leave payment. Compare the result with official HR figures before using it for settlement discussions.
Calculate With Your Actual Employment Information
Return to the calculator and enter your confirmed joining date, salary and annual leave record for an individual estimate.
Annual Leave and Encashment Examples in AED
These three examples demonstrate the essential differences between accrued leave, remaining leave and termination payment. They are illustrative calculations, not determinations of an individual worker's legal claim.
| Scenario | Earned Leave | Leave Already Taken | Unused Days | Basic Salary | Estimated Encashment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One Completed Year | 30 Days | 18 Days | 12 Days | AED 6,000 | AED 2,400 |
| Two Completed Years | 60 Days | 45 Days | 15 Days | AED 9,000 | AED 4,500 |
| Three Completed Years | 90 Days | 80 Days | 10 Days | AED 12,000 | AED 4,000 |
Example One: Twelve Unused Days
An employee completes twelve months of service and earns thirty annual leave days. After taking eighteen days, twelve remain. With monthly basic pay of AED 6,000, the estimated daily basic wage is AED 200. The unused leave valuation becomes twelve multiplied by AED 200, which equals AED 2,400.
Example Two: Two Years of Service
An employee completes two full years, representing sixty days of modelled accrued leave. If forty-five days were taken and no other adjustments apply, the unused balance equals fifteen days. With basic pay of AED 9,000, the daily rate is AED 300 and the estimated cash equivalent is AED 4,500.
Example Three: A Longer Employment Record
A worker completes three years of continuous service, accumulating ninety modelled days. After recording eighty used days, ten days remain before adjustments. A monthly basic salary of AED 12,000 gives a daily rate of AED 400, producing an indicative encashment value of AED 4,000.
All examples assume that the recorded unused balances remain eligible and have not already been paid, carried forward under different arrangements or adjusted. A final settlement should use the verified employee leave ledger.
Understanding UAE Annual Leave Encashment
Leave encashment refers to monetary compensation instead of taking accrued annual leave as time away from work. Its legal basis and availability depend on whether employment continues, ends or involves an agreed carry-forward arrangement.
Unused Leave at the End of Employment
When a worker's service ends, UAE private-sector legislation provides for payment relating to annual leave that remains due and was not used. Article 29 addresses compensation for unused leave and proportional leave for parts of the final service year.
For the standard federal model, the cash estimate is based on the employee's basic wage. Allowances are therefore not automatically included in the termination encashment formula.
This amount can form one component of a final settlement. It should be checked alongside outstanding salary, notice arrangements and any separate end-of-service entitlement.
Paid Vacation During Employment
Annual leave taken during ongoing employment is paid leave, normally at the worker's full wage under the relevant statutory provisions. That means regular applicable allowances are not simply discarded from ordinary leave salary.
The calculator's full-wage value is provided to illustrate the financial value associated with days of paid time off. It is not necessarily a separate lump-sum payment owed in addition to ordinary salary.
Employees should check their employment contract and payroll treatment before assuming the full-wage figure is an amount payable as encashment.
Annual Leave Encashment Is Different From Gratuity
End-of-service gratuity and unused leave compensation are separate employment concepts. The calculation bases, eligibility conditions and applicable rules can differ. An employee should not assume that a gratuity figure already includes the amount due for unused annual leave.
When preparing a settlement, record each component separately. For related employment calculations, the UAE Final Settlement Calculator can help organise the wider salary and benefits reconciliation.
Carrying Forward Unused Annual Leave in the UAE
Employees sometimes finish a leave year with vacation days still unused. Carry-forward depends on the applicable law, agreement with the employer and the company's leave-management procedures.
Approved Carry-Forward
Unused days may be transferred into the following leave year where an agreement and applicable establishment regulations permit. Confirm the actual transferred amount rather than assuming that every unused day automatically carries forward.
Company Leave Ledger
HR records may include annual allocations, past leave usage, approved carry-forward and previous encashment payments. These records should be reconciled before interpreting a cumulative service-based calculation.
Employment Law Protections
The employer cannot simply deny the opportunity to use accrued leave indefinitely. Specific restrictions, employee choices and implementing regulations determine how unused annual leave should be managed.
How the Adjustment Field Works
The calculator contains a net ledger adjustment field. Use a positive amount to add documented eligible leave not already included in the modelled accrual. Use a negative adjustment to account for an official correction or other verified reduction not already captured in leave taken.
Do not enter carried-forward leave twice. If it was accrued during the employment period already selected, the cumulative formula may have counted it. An adjustment should reconcile the calculator to your payroll records, not duplicate days already included.
What About Unpaid Leave?
Certain periods of absence can affect the length of service counted for annual leave accrual, depending on the applicable statutory provisions and the particular absence. This tool assumes continuous eligible service and does not automatically subtract unpaid absence days.
If you have substantial unpaid leave, obtain the adjusted eligible service record from HR. For salary effects, the UAE Unpaid Leave Deduction Calculator addresses a related but different payroll question.
Important Annual Leave Calculation Mistakes
Small differences in salary definitions, date conventions and leave records can produce significant differences in unused leave valuations. Review the following issues when interpreting results.
Using Gross Instead of Basic Salary
Termination leave encashment under the standard model is based on basic salary. Housing or transport allowances should not automatically be added to that daily encashment rate.
Mixing Different Leave Years
Do not subtract leave taken in one year from an accrual figure covering only another year. Employment dates and leave-used totals must describe a consistent period.
Ignoring the First-Year Threshold
The standard statutory first-year rule differs from the thirty-day annual entitlement after a completed year. Applying thirty days from the joining date without considering the qualifying period can misstate an early balance.
Forgetting Prior Encashment
Days already paid out or validly reconciled through the employer's leave ledger should not be paid or counted again. Compare cumulative earned days with actual historical records.
Confusing Working and Calendar Days
The statutory leave allowance and a company's working-day leave record may use different counting conventions. Convert the figures consistently before comparing entitlements.
Applying the Wrong Employment Law
Special employment regimes, including DIFC and ADGM, may have different rules. Government workers, domestic workers and certain alternative arrangements require their own calculations.
How to Check Your Leave Balance Against HR Records
A calculator is most useful when it helps explain an existing payroll record. Ask your HR department for the leave opening balance, earned annual leave, days taken, approved adjustments and closing balance for the period being checked.
Compare the recorded joining date with your employment contract and verify that the same leave counting method is applied throughout. An annual leave balance shown in working days may need conversion before comparison with a calendar-day entitlement.
Where the figures differ, ask whether the employer has applied contractually enhanced leave, an agreed carry-forward arrangement, previous encashment, an adjusted service period or a different method of fractional-month rounding.
The UAE Annual Leave Calculator – Vacation Days & Leave Encashment should support that reconciliation, not replace the employer's records or an authoritative legal decision.

Frequently Asked Questions About UAE Annual Leave
Find answers about eligibility, vacation accrual, leave encashment, salary calculations, weekends and employment settlements under the standard UAE private-sector system.
What Is the UAE Annual Leave Calculator – Vacation Days & Leave Encashment?
It is an independent online estimator that calculates annual leave accrued from employment dates, subtracts recorded vacation days and estimates the cash value of eligible unused leave using monthly basic salary.
How Many Annual Leave Days Do UAE Employees Receive?
Under standard federal private-sector rules, employees are entitled to thirty days of annual leave per year after completing one year of service. During the qualifying period of more than six months but less than one year, entitlement is two days per month.
Is Annual Leave Available Before Six Months?
The ordinary statutory annual leave entitlement has a service threshold of more than six months. Employers can offer more favourable contractual arrangements, including earlier paid vacation.
How Do I Calculate Unused Annual Leave?
Start with earned leave over the relevant service period, subtract annual leave already used and apply any valid leave-ledger adjustments. Compare the resulting figure against the employer's official closing balance.
How Is UAE Leave Encashment Calculated?
For eligible unused annual leave at employment termination, the standard estimate multiplies unused leave days by monthly basic salary divided by thirty. Actual payment should follow the applicable statutory provisions and verified leave records.
Is Encashment Calculated on Basic or Full Salary?
The standard end-of-employment unused leave payment is based on basic wage. Ordinary paid annual leave during ongoing employment is a different situation and generally uses the worker's full wage under the applicable law.
Do Weekends Count During Annual Leave?
Under the standard calendar-day approach, weekends falling within annual leave may count toward the leave period. More favourable arrangements under an employment contract or company policy can affect the outcome.
Are UAE Public Holidays Included in Annual Leave?
Public holidays falling during an annual leave period are generally included unless the employment contract or company rules provide more favourable treatment. Confirm the exact leave-counting arrangement with HR.
Can Unused Annual Leave Be Carried Forward?
Carry-forward may be permitted with employer agreement under applicable regulations and establishment rules. The number of eligible days and their future treatment should be documented rather than assumed.
What Happens to Unused Leave After Resignation?
When an eligible employee's service ends, unused annual leave forms part of the amounts that must be reviewed for payment. The balance and monetary value depend on the applicable employment law, basic wage and official leave records.
Does Annual Leave Accrue During Unpaid Absence?
Some periods of absence may affect eligible service or annual leave accrual. This calculator does not automatically model such interruptions, so employees should obtain the correct adjusted service period from their employer.
Does the Calculator Cover DIFC and ADGM Employees?
No. DIFC and ADGM have their own employment legal frameworks. Workers covered by those regimes should consult the specific relevant regulations instead of applying the ordinary federal private-sector calculation automatically.
What if My Employer Provides More Than Thirty Days?
A more favourable contractual entitlement may apply. This calculator uses the standard statutory model and does not automatically calculate additional contractual vacation days. An official ledger adjustment may help reconcile a confirmed enhanced balance.
Why Is My Calculated Balance Different From My Payslip?
Differences can result from employer leave-year conventions, partial-month rounding, past carry-forward, previous encashment, adjusted service periods or inconsistent calendar-day and working-day records.
Is This an Official MOHRE Annual Leave Calculator?
No. It is an independent ExpatCalc estimation tool. Official advice and employment-rights assistance should be obtained from MOHRE or the relevant authority responsible for your employment arrangement.
Can I Use It for Final Settlement Planning?
Yes, as an estimate of the unused annual leave component. It does not calculate the entire settlement, including gratuity, outstanding salary, notice compensation or other employment-related payments.
How This Annual Leave Estimator Handles Your Information
The calculator operates in your browser using the values you provide. It does not require an account or send entered payroll details to a server through its calculation script.
The first completed year is modelled as thirty accrued days. During the more-than-six-month qualifying period, an illustrative proportional monthly method is used. After the first year, subsequent service is prorated using actual anniversary-year lengths. This is a transparent planning convention rather than a claim that all employers must use identical fractional-month calculations.
The calculator does not determine whether historical unused leave was lawfully carried forward, encashed or otherwise adjusted. It also excludes special employment regimes, interruptions in eligible service, disputes over salary classification and employment contracts granting enhanced benefits.
If the calculation displays a negative balance, it means the entered leave taken exceeds the modelled earned amount after adjustments. It does not independently establish a recoverable payroll debt or legal right to deduct wages.
For legal and financial decisions, compare all results with the current statutory rules, employment documents and written HR records. Where an entitlement is disputed, contact the responsible employment authority or a suitably qualified adviser.
